What’s a green smoothie? How is it different compared to other colored smoothies?
Green smoothies are a delightful concoction which can have a positive effect on skin's overall complexion. They are packed full of nutrients that bodies can use to repair and heal the skin.
The trick is adding a bunch of leafy greens! Leafy greens consist of amazing vitamins and minerals. However, sometimes it's tough to get enough into our everyday diet. But mixing them into a smoothie makes it easy! Adding fruit can mask the flavor of greens, so you'll forget you're actually drinking a bunch of kale... well, besides the bright green color.
What else do I love about green smoothies?
- They’re quick to make
- Endless combinations never make it boring
- Easy to take on-the-go
- They’re increasingly popular, so you won’t look too weird for drinking green sludge 😚
How TO make a green smoothie:
Buy a Blender – No need to jump into purchasing a really expensive blender. Start with a one that is reasonably priced, but not too cheap. Some of the cheapest can be frustrating when trying to mix ingredients. Read reviews online to find a blender with decent blades.
Choose Fruit – Decide on a few pieces of fruit to add or a combination. I like using frozen strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Bananas are great for more flavor and a creamy texture. Tossing in a handful of ice cubes with fresh fruit will do too.
Choose Greens – The volume of greens in the smoothie should match or exceed the amount of fruit. It’s a delicate balance. Start with less than 50% greens and slowly increase to get used to the taste. I suggest beginning with spinach which has a very mild taste. Later on, experiment with other greens like arugula or chard. Each green has unique properties, so change it up!
Choose a Liquid – A liquid is absolutely necessary otherwise it won’t blend. Almond milk is my personal preference. Other dairy-free options are coconut milk, hemp milk, rice milk or coconut water. Use only enough to blend or it could end up as juice rather than a smoothie.
Extra Goodies – So much can be incorporated into smoothies for extra nutrition, change in taste, or additional calories. Think cacao powder, dates, chia or flax seeds, nuts, coconut flakes, vanilla extract, peanut or almond butter, etc!
Blend, Blend, Blend – This is where the magic happens! Keep adding ingredients one by one until everything is fully blended.
Enjoy!
